Sexual Harassment in Schools

27 April 2016

The Women and Equalities Committee has launched the first parliamentary inquiry into the scale and impact of sexual harassment and sexual violence in schools, and they want to hear from you if you work with children and young people.

Evidence from their pre-consultation work with over 300 young people shows sexting, online bullying and the normalisation of pornography are all issues for students and they want more support in dealing with them.

These issues are common concerns that we at CEOP hear from our network, and in recent years have come into sharper focus by both Government and the third sector. The Government inquiry will focus on:

- establishing the scale of sexual harassment and sexual violence in primary and    secondary schools in the UK

- understanding the impact of sexual harassment and sexual violence on pupils and  teachers

- making practical recommendations to reduce the levels of sexual harassment and  sexual violence in schools

The scope of the inquiry focuses on both males and females and includes the online and offline environment. The inquiry also covers how these issues impact teachers, the role of OFSTED and other agencies in monitoring and tackling the problem, and good practise responses.
