Do you use the internet? Learn how to stay safe!

Going on the internet is really fun.  You can play games, chat to friends and find out lots of information about different things.  You can use the internet on a computer, or a mobile phone or a games console.  But there are dangers about being on the internet.  This page tells you how to stay safe online.  Then you can keep having fun on the internet, but stay safe too.

Things to remember on the internet:

1. Keep your personal information private

2. Be nice to other people

3. Only use your webcam with people you know and trust

4. Tell an adult you know if ever you feel sad or scared

1. Keep your personal information private

Personal information is stuff about you. This is things like:

  • Where you live

  • Your mobile phone number

  • The name of your school

  • Photos of you

It is ok to tell your friends your personal information.  But you should not tell your personal information to people that you have never met.

Watch our film 'Know Your Friends with Josh & Sue' here to learn more about how to stay safe on the internet.

2. Be nice to other people on the internet

It is important to remember to be nice to other people on the internet because you don’t want other people to feel sad.  If someone is being nasty to you, this is not ok either.  This includes someone saying something horrible about you on:

  • A mobile phone

  • An email

  • A site like Facebook, MySpace or Bebo

  • A game

  • Instant Messenger

  • Any website on the internet

Tell an adult that you trust if someone says something to you on the internet that makes you sad or worried.

3. Only use your webcam with friends you know and trust

It can be good to use webcams to help you chat easily with your friends online.  It is important to remember, only use your webcam with friends that you know well in the real world and trust.  Always remember to turn your webcam off when you’ve finished using it. If you are not sure whether you should use your webcam with a person, check with an adult you trust.

Watch our film 'Sam's Real Friends' to learn more about staying safe online when using a webcam and sites like Facebook. This film is in British Sign Language (BSL) with subtitles.

4. Tell an adult you know and trust if you are ever sad or scared about something on the internet

An adult you trust might be one of these people:

  • Your mum or your dad

  • Your care worker

  • Your teacher

  • Your youth worker

  • Your friend’s mum or dad

  • Your auntie or uncle

Tell the person that you feel comfortable to talking to.  If you tell an adult you trust they can help keep you safe.
